UPDATE ON TransAsia AIRWAYS FLIGHT 222 CRASH

As the smoke clears on the crash site of TrasnAsia Flight 222 we now have a more accurate report on the details of the doomed flight.
Here's what we know:

The ATR 72 was operating flight 222 from Kaohsiung City bound for Penghu Magong airport

Flight GE222 was scheduled to depart Kaohsiung Siaogang Airport at 4pm, but was delayed until 5.43pm due to severe weather conditions

54 passengers and 4 crew were said to be on board the twin-engine turboprop short-haul regional airliner built by the French-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR

51 of the 58 are reported to have perished in the crash

Witnesses on the ground reported the survivors emerged from the mangled aircraft on their own

The flight was attempting to land in severe weather and was ordered by ATC to abort their first attempt at landing

It later lost contact with the control tower and then was reported to have crashed near the runway into local residential buildings

Two buildings were damaged on the ground but no injuries were reported in the residence

Taiwan was battered by Typhoon Matmo with heavy rains and strong winds going up to 173 kph (107 mph)

TransAsia Airways is a Taiwan-based airline with around 23 Airbus and ATR aircraft in its fleet. The airline mainly operates domestic routes, but has some flights to Japan, Thailand and Cambodia among its Asian destinations
